action

Early in the morning, a man walks in front of the car on a snowy road in a sparsely populated area. At first they suspect that he is drunk, but the man collapses motionless. Both alert the police and the ambulance. Lieutenant Jürgen Huebner is not very enthusiastic about being called to work in the early morning when it is cold and snowy. He has Lieutenant Woltersdorf bring warm clothing to the crime scene. The ambulance found that the man who had no papers with him is very drunk. Initially, there appears to be no investigation. Jürgen Hübner follows the man's tracks in snow and soon after stands in front of the apparently abandoned motor cargo ship Hohen Luckow, which is stuck in the ice . Music is playing on the ship, the tables are evidence of an excessive feast. A corpse lies on the ice in front of the ship.

The dead person is identified as Hubert Göpfert, the man found on the street as Ernst Klamroth. Both belonged to the ship's crew. Uwe Wiechert, skipper of the Hohen Luckow , on the other hand, is fleeting. It turns out that he is visiting his wife in the hospital, who has just given birth to a son. Uwe confesses to his wife that Hubert is on her conscience. The autopsy reveals that Hubert died of a blow to the head that caused a blood clot in the brain. The tool of the act, a ship's nail converted into a bottle opener, can be found under Hubert's bed. Ernst Klamroth, who is admitted to the hospital at 3 per mille, has Hubert's blood on his hand, but cannot remember anything. Two women were on board: Ernst's lover Waltraud Stoll disembarked before she got stuck. She had argued seriously. When Jürgen Hübner wants to question her, he learns that she had a nervous breakdown and is not allowed to be questioned. In addition, Hubert had brought the waitress Loni Fielenz on board, which led to the argument between Hubert and Ernst. Loni has a scratch on her hand that she got from a scuffle. The manhunt for Uwe is initiated. The police finally arrested him when he went to see his wife again in the hospital.

Uwe reports on what happened: he was supposed to take over an express transport shortly before Christmas. He not only brought Hubert on board, but also Ernst, who promises his girlfriend that it will be the last voyage. He persuades her to come along as a bather so that she can experience life on board for herself. Both plan to get married. The tour is difficult because the channel freezes over and over again. When the boat gets stuck in the ice, Ernst manages to get the boat free by jerky maneuvering. Although Hubert absolutely wants to stop at the berth at Loni's waitress to have a drink, Uwe gives the order to drive through because everyone wants to be home for Christmas. Shortly before the landing stage, Uwe learns that he has become a father. Uwe, Ernst and Waltraut drink to his health below deck. Meanwhile Hubert stops the boat and takes Loni on board. He is in love with Loni, who has long had a weekend relationship with Ernst. Hubert wants to open her eyes so that she separates from Ernst and becomes his girlfriend. It comes to a scandal when both women meet in Ernst's cabin. Waltraut leaves the ship while Ernst throws Loni out. Then he gets drunk with liquor. A little later, Loni, who comes out of Hubert's cabin, also leaves the boat. He comes to a scuffle on deck between Ernst and Hubert, but Ernst is too drunk for an argument. Hubert is bleeding on his head, but dismisses this as unimportant in front of Uwe. Uwe gets the boat going, exhausted. He falls asleep behind the wheel and only wakes up when the ship gets stuck. Ernst can't help because he's drunk. Hubert is not doing well, but he and Uwe try to free the ship. Hubert tries to free the propeller with a boat hook, but he does not respond to Uwe's instructions. When Uwe starts the diesel engines, Hubert is catapulted from the ship over the boat hook jammed in the screw and lies dead on the ice when Uwe looks after him. The investigators tell him that it was not the fall that caused the death, but the blood clot from a blow.

From Uwe's story, the investigators conclude that the head wound was not caused by any of the crew. They question Loni, who tells them that she was desperate after discovering Ernst's double game and that Hubert had given her something to drink. In the cabin, he became intrusive and tried to rape her. Then she hit him with the ship's nail. Afterwards he looked normal and she left. Jürgen Hübner notes that the consequences of such a blow sometimes only become visible some time later - as with Hubert Göpfert.

production

The last trip was of 1 December 1978 until 31 January 1979 under the working title decision in the harbor at Schwielowsee and surroundings on Lake Zeuthen and in Koenigs Wusterhausen , Lebus , Caputh , Karnin, Niederfinow and the harbor Anklam rotated. The costumes of the film created Katrin Johnsen , the Filmbauten come from Klaus Winter . The film had its television premiere on December 2, 1979 in the first program of GDR television. The audience participation was 61.7 percent.

The motor freight ship on which the film was shot was called Zittau (company registration number 5-415) and at the time of filming it belonged to VEB Binnenreederei Berlin . It was built in 1961 at VEB Rosslauer shipyard . After various changes of owner, it went out of service in 2010 and was relocated to Parey . Partial scrapping took place there in October of that year. A planned use of the then remaining fore section as a feed was not implemented. In 2012 the forecastle was also scrapped. When the ice was thick (15–20 cm), the trip to the filming in January on the lake was only possible with the help of an icebreaker. A rudder blade on the rudder shaft was torn off by the thick ice floes, which resulted in a stay in the shipyard.

The film was the 62nd episode in the film series. Lieutenant Jürgen Huebner investigated in his 28th case, Lieutenant Woltersdorf in his 6th case.
