The Jazz Welle plus Hamburg was a local, private radio program for Hamburg and the surrounding area. RDS identification: "Jazz W".

It started broadcasting on November 16, 1991. The special-interest program was produced in a small studio in Hamburg-Osdorf and broadcast exclusively via the city frequency of 97.1  MHz from Hamburg's Heinrich Hertz Tower . In the evenings and on weekends, the shareholders at the time organized the broadcasting operations personally and on a voluntary basis.

A culturally demanding program was broadcast around the clock, which, following the example of the Munich Jazz Wave Plus, initially covered largely all musically possible forms of jazz . After a program reform in 1992, the musical focus was on swinging mainstream jazz . German-language news was taken over by the BBC and from 1992 traffic radio was also broadcast. The Jazz Welle plus Hamburg was already technically very innovative at the time and was one of the first German radio stations to control traffic announcements via UECP without switching on the Hinz trill .

The City of Hamburg did not allow the intended financial support as a cultural project. The ratings also fell short of the expectations of the shareholders. The market share was consistently below 1.0 percent - too little for an advertising-financed program. In addition, the limited technical range of the city frequency limited an expansion of the audience.

The program was last broadcast in its original form on the night of October 3rd to 4th, 1995. The following morning, those responsible switched to the Energy Hamburg format . The “Hits of Today” dominated the musical content of the programs. However, at that time the proportion of “black and jazz-related” music was still stipulated by license conditions. In the first few years, Energy Hamburg was not a pure youth broadcaster, the listeners were addressed as "Sie".

The name "Jazz Welle plus Hamburg" existed until 2007 as a carrier GmbH for the Energy Hamburg program .
