Jazz Festival Willisau

The Willisau Jazz Festival has been one of the most important international events on the contemporary jazz scene since its inception in 1975.

The festival in Lucerne's Willisau / Switzerland has been broadcast live on Swiss radio for many years. It is an international forum for contemporary jazz, initially rooted in free jazz . For many years the festival in Willisau was the smaller counterpart to the Moers Festival . A festival program similar to that in Moers was presented in Willisau. Concert recordings of festival appearances are u. a. has been released on HatHut Records .

Graphic designer Niklaus Troxler has been organizing jazz concerts since 1966 . This resulted in “Jazz in Willisau” with a series of concerts in the winter half-year and the festival in late summer. Over 800 concerts with over 2000 musicians have taken place in Willisau to date (as of 2008), and over 50 concerts have been released as LPs or CDs. The pianist Keith Jarrett called Willisau "one of the best places for music in the world".

In 2011 Troxler donated the festival archive with 250 magnetic tapes, 123 DAT tapes with concert recordings from the festival, as well as program booklets, press reports and posters to the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences , where they are to be professionally archived. His nephew Arno Troxler has been organizing the festival since 2010.
