Jazzbo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jazzbo is a German ska band from Berlin that has dedicated itself to the traditional Jamaican ska jazz of the 1960s . Jazzbo was created in 1997 from the merger of five Berlin musicians from the bands Yebo , Engine 54 and Time Tough. Later musicians from the Skampis and Wood-In-Di-Fire joined them. The band appears in the classic five-man combo line-up with exclusively acoustic instruments. Their instrumental interpretations of ska classics, mixed with their own compositions, come very close to the sound of the original ska jazz, as played by The Skatalites in the mid-1960s .

Surname

The American slang term jazzbo has several meanings. As the urban dictionary notes, on the one hand he affectionately describes a jazz connoisseur and is originally associated with the legendary DJ Al "Jazzbeaux" Collins (1919–97). On the other hand, jazzbo is a derogatory term for an African American that comes from the time when jazz in the American southern states was exclusively a music of the African population.

The namesake Prince Jazzbo (actually Linval Carter, born in Clarendon in 1951) is a Jamaican reggae and dub musician.
