Jean-Baptiste Dureau de La Malle

Jean-Baptiste-Joseph-René Dureau de La Malle (also Jean-Baptiste Dureau de Lamalle ; born November 27, 1742 in Ouanaminthe , † September 19, 1807 in Mauves-sur-Huisne ) was a French writer, translator and member of the Académie française .

life and work

Dureau de La Malle grew up as the son of an officer in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti ) and studied in Paris. Since he was sufficiently wealthy, he could devote himself to his inclinations and open a literary salon in Paris . In 1802 he was a member of the Corps législatif (legislative body). In 1804 he was elected to the Académie française (seat no. He died two years later at the age of 64. His son Adolphe Dureau de La Malle (1777-1857) was from 1818 a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres .

Dureau made a name for himself as a translator of Seneca ( De Beneficiis "About Beneficiaries "), Sallust , Titus Livius and especially of Tacitus . He also gave theoretical views on translation problems .
