Jean-Bernard Zuber

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jean-Bernard Zuber is a French theoretical and mathematical physicist.

Zuber studied from 1966 to 1968 at the École polytechnique and then worked as a researcher at the CNRS at the nuclear research center in Saclay in the theoretical physics department. In 1974 he received his doctorate (Thése d'Etat) with Jean Zinn-Justin at the University of Paris-South (XI) in Orsay ( Les champs de Yang-Mills et la diffusion des mesons pseudoscalaires ). From 1975 to 2004 he held the same position as engineer at the CEA (Commissariat à l´Énergie Atomique) in Saclay and at the same time professor at the University of Paris VII from 1995 to 1998 . Since 2004 he has been a professor at the University of Paris VI . Since 2005 he has been director of the Fédération de Recherches Interactions Fondamentales (FRIF). From 1995 to 2000 he was director of the theoretical physics section of the CNRS.

Zuber is with Claude Itzykson , with whom he often worked, the author of a standard work on quantum field theory (QFT). In addition to applications of QFT in elementary particle physics, he also dealt with statistical mechanics, for example the Ising model , and in particular with conformal field theories , random matrices and matrix integrals including applications in combinatorics and knot theory .

In 1989 he received the Prix Dostaut-Blutet of the French Academy of Sciences and in 1991 the Prix Paul Langevin of the French Physical Society. He has been Chevalier des Palmes Academiques since 1999.
