Claude Georges Itzykson (born April 11, 1938 in Paris ; † May 22, 1995 ) was a leading French theoretical physicist who worked in quantum field theory and statistical mechanics .

Live and act

Itzykson lost his father in a National Socialist concentration camp and grew up in the orphanage for Jewish children in Maisons-Laffitte . He attended the Lycée Condorcet and studied from 1957 at the École polytechnique and then at the École des Mines in Paris , where he received his doctorate. In the 1960s he worked at the Nuclear Research Center ( Center d'Etudes nucléaires de Saclay ) in Saclay under Claude Bloch , Raymond Stora and Maurice Jacob . There he received his doctorate in 1967 and remained there as a professor until his death. In the 1970s he studied Yang Mills theories such as quantum chromodynamics and formulations of these theories on the grid (he and Jean-Michel Drouffe were among the first to derive phase diagrams for model theories on the grid), and in the 1980s with conforming field theories with applications in statistical mechanics (e.g. quantum Hall effect ) and algebraic geometry, the Ising model and with disordered systems ( random matrices, etc.), to which he originally led his work on lattice range theories. He summarized these areas in 1989 in a two-volume textbook "Statistical Field Theory" with Drouffe. His “Quantum Field Theory”, which he wrote with Jean-Bernard Zuber in 1980, is still a standard textbook.

In 1995 he received the Ampère Prize of the French Academy of Sciences and in 1972 the Paul Langevin Prize .
