Roger Balian (born January 18, 1933 in Lyon ) is a French theoretical physicist with Armenian roots.

Balian studied from 1952 in Paris at the École polytechnique . From 1955 to 1958 he was Ingénieurs des mines (→ Mines ParisTech ). From 1956 he was in the theoretical physics department at the nuclear research center of the Commissariat à l'énergie atomique (CEA) in Saclay , where he took over the management of the theoretical physics department in 1979 and stayed until 1987. From 1972 he was a lecturer and from 1978 professor of physics at the École polytechnique, where he retired in 1998.

Balian was visiting professor at Yale University and the University of California, Santa Barbara , among others .

He is known for his contributions to quantum mechanical many-body theory and statistical physics (phase transitions, role of information), but also dealt with the fundamentals of quantum mechanics, nuclear physics, lattice scale theories (with Claude Itzykson ), quantum chaos and semiclassical methods and other areas of theoretical physics up to Distribution of galaxies. In many-particle theory, he worked a lot with Claude Bloch and Cyrano de Dominicis in the 1960s .

In 1952 he predicted the existence of a phase B in the superfluid helium-3 isotope.

From 1972 to 1980 he was director of theoretical physics at the École de Physique des Houches . From 1988 he was co-editor and editor of Europhysics Letters from 1992 to 1995 and co-editor of Journal of Physics A from 1970 to 1975 .

Balian is a member of the Académie des Sciences , since 1977 as a corresponding and since 1995 as a full member. He is also a member of the Uppsala Royal Society of Sciences and the Armenian Academy of Sciences. He is scientific advisor to the Commissariat à l'énergie atomique (CEA). From 1995 to 2007 he was on the scientific advisory board of the CEA (and also on its advisory board for military applications). In 1997/98 he was president of the French physical society ( Société française de physique ).

In 1954 he received the Prix Henri Poincaré , also in 1954 the Prix Laplace of the Académie des sciences , in 1977 the Prix Jean Ricard and in 1966 the Prix Paul Langevin of the French Physical Society.

He is in command of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques , Knight of the Legion of Honor and officer of the Ordre national du Mérite .

From 1976 to 1982 he was on the national committee of the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), from 1988 to 1993 in its scientific council and from 1992 to 1995 president of its physics subdivision.
