Jean-Claude Ellena
Jean-Claude Ellena (born April 7, 1947 in Grasse , Alpes-Maritimes department ) is a French perfumer . From 2004 to 2016 he was the “nose” of the French luxury goods manufacturer Hermès . Since 2019 he has been head of the fragrance creations at Le Couvent Parfums.
Jean-Claude Ellena was born in Grasse, a place known for its perfume industry , as the son of a perfumer. Due to bad grades, his father took him out of school at an early age, after which he had to work as an assistant. At this time Ellena was earning his living in the perfume industry until he married the Irish-born Susannah in 1967, who still accompanies him on all his travels. After his marriage in 1968 he began training with the Swiss flavor and fragrance specialist Givaudan , where he was soon able to mix a bestseller for Van Cleef & Arpels . As one of around 100 employees in the fine perfumery, who mostly anonymously deliver fragrance compositions to various cosmetics companies, he was able to draw attention to himself early on. He created other fragrance compositions before moving to the German company Haarmann & Reimer , today's Symrise , in 1992 . In 2004 he was poached by Hermès, where he has been working as a house perfumer ever since.
His trademark is, among other things, the concentration on the essentials. At first he used a good 200 ingredients for his blends, recently only about 20. In autumn 2012, Insel Verlag will publish his book The Dreamed Fragrance - From the Life of a Perfumer .
He received the FiFi Award from the Fragance Foundation France six times for his perfume creations .
