Jean-Denis de Montlovier

Jean-Denis Montlovier (* 1733 in Valence , Dauphiné , today Drôme ; † 1804 in Dagues près Marsanne ) was a French lawyer, author and encyclopaedist .

Live and act

After studying law, Montlovier first became a lawyer at the Parlement du Dauphiné or Parlement de Grenoble, the jurisdiction of Grenoble. At times he served with the gendarmes de la garde du roi .

After his retirement he devoted himself to writing. For example, he wrote the article “Thief” (voleur) in the Encyclopédie by Denis Diderot and d'Alembert , here he also addressed the problem of the use of the death penalty for desertion and suggested possible solutions. He was also the author of the play "Friend of the Court" (L'Ami de Cour).
