Jean-Edme Romilly
Jean-Edme Romilly (* 1739 or 1740 in Geneva ; † October 27, 1779 ) was a Geneva theologian and encyclopaedist .

He was the only son of the watchmaker , journalist and encyclopaedist Jean Romilly (1714–1796). His mother was Elisabeth Andrienne Joly (* 1719). His younger sister was called Elisabeth Jeanne Pierrette Romilly (1742-1814).
Jean-Edme Romilly studied until 1763 theology . Three years later he was pastor in a Walloon church in London , Église wallonne . However, he soon returned to Geneva and was recommended to the parish in Chancy . He married Françoise Dorothée Argand (1748–1797), they both had a daughter, Marie Joséphine Romilly (1770–1823). In 1770 he submitted his resignation to the Council of State of Geneva , Conseil d'État .
He was a friend of Jean-Jacques Rousseau , Jean-Baptiste le Rond d'Alembert , Denis Diderot and François Marie Arouet de Voltaire . Jean-Edme Romilly worked, like his father Jean Romilly, on the Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers . As an encyclopaedist (Encyclopédie) he wrote the articles on tolerance and virtue, Tolérance et Vertu .
