Jean-François de Saint-Lambert
Jean-François de Saint-Lambert (born December 26, 1716 in Nancy, † February 9, 1803 near Paris ) was a Lorraine , later French military , poet, philosopher and author of widely read essays and fables. His greatest success was Les saisons (1770), a lengthy poem about nature and country life. The Académie française opened to him .
Live and act
In 1750, after the death of his lover Émilie du Châtelet and their newborn daughter, Saint-Lambert left the Lorraine court of Stanislaus I. Leszczyński in Lunéville , where he had been head of the Guard, and went to Paris . There he came into contact with literary salons in which manuscripts of his work had been in circulation for over ten years. In the house of Jeanne-Françoise Quinault (1699–1783) Saint-Lambert made the acquaintance of M me d'Épinay , through whom he met Rousseau , Grimm , Denis Diderot and Paul Henri Thiry d'Holbach . He had a long relationship with M me d'Épinay's sister-in-law, M me d'Houdetot . He lived with her until his death in 1803 on a country estate not far from Paris.
Saint-Lambert was from 1750 to 1780, with interruptions such. B. the Seven Years War brought about, guest at Paul Henri Thiry d'Holbach's philosophical discussion rounds (the so-called "coterie" or "café de l'europe"). According to Antoine-Alexandre Barbier , he published in Nancy Holbach's first work, Le christianisme dévoilé , which was critical of religion , when he was ordered to go there for military service.
