Jean-Louis Bérenguier (born February 28, 1958 in La Ciotat ) is a former French football player and later coach .

Player career

Bérenguier began playing football at a club from his hometown La Ciotat, where he attracted the attention of various professional clubs, which enabled him to move to the second division club SC Toulon in 1977 . In the course of his first season at Toulon, the 19-year-old became a regular on the right side of defense. After he had fought with the team in his first year for promotion to the top French division, he had to accept relegation to the third division in 1980. Bérenguier remained loyal to his club and managed to get promoted again in his only third division year.

In 1983 he reached the league with the team, where he was able to defend his regular place. Toulon played several times against relegation before the team secured fifth place in the table in the season 1987/88 , which was not enough for a qualification for the UEFA Cup . In the following year, Bérenguier held the top class as a regular with the team until he was ousted by Thierry Rabat due to injuries during the season . Later the competition consisted mainly of Frédéric Martin . Despite everything, he remained loyal to the club until he was relegated in 1993. The then 35-year-old footballer ended after 289 first division and 140 second division games without a goal his professional career, which he had played exclusively at Toulon and which made him the club's record player.

Coaching career

Due to financial problems, Toulon fell not only in the second, but in the third division in 1993 and it was Bérenguier who immediately took over the responsibility as a coach after his active career. The desired promotion to the second division did not succeed in the first year and in view of major financial problems followed in 1995 the sporting descent to the fourth division, which was prevented by the forced relegation of other teams. As a result, the ex-professional Toulon turned his back on and disappeared from football until 2007 as president of his youth club from La Ciotat. He gave up this post in 2009 to become sports director of third division club SO Cassis Carnoux . A little later he was promoted to coach, when he was dismissed in March 2010 in view of the threatened and later actually occurred relegation.
