Jean-Michel Othoniel (born January 27, 1964 in Saint-Étienne ) is a French sculptor who works primarily with glass.

Jean-Michel Othoniel graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts in Cergy-Pontoise in 1988 .

At the beginning of the 1990s he exhibited works made of wax or sulfur at documenta IX in Kassel. He began a little later with the best glass blowers of Murano together. With his fairytale-like and associative installations made of Murano glass, Othoniel has been attracting the attention of an international audience since the late 1990s.

“Oversized pearls made of translucent or opaque colored glass are connected by Othoniel to form monumental chains that unfold their luxurious splendor in the branches of trees or on building facades. The artist, who lives in Paris, combines bubbles made of precious Murano glass and fine metal rings to create delicate bed frames (“Mon Lit”, 2002) or fragile crowns (“Kiosque de Noctambules”, 2000). The frame made of glass beads that Othoniel mounted on a simple wooden boat for the sculpture “Le Bateau de Larmes” (2004) is supposed to symbolize the suffering and tears of Cuban boat refugees. The translucent character of the glass corresponds to the typical appearance of watercolors, which Othoniel prefers to use for sketching his projects and ideas. His numerous watercolors already represent an independent oeuvre that reflects the artistic imagination of Othoniel. "

His works are shown at numerous internationally important exhibitions in various countries. Among other things in 1994 at the exhibition "Féminin / Masculin" in the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris. In 2012 there was an extensive retrospective at the Brooklyn Museum .

Othoniel was artist in residence at the Villa Medici in Rome in 1996 and at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston in 2011 .
