Jean-Noël Chevron

Jean-Noël Chevron (born October 5, 1790 ; † 1867) was a Franco-Dutch architect and town planner.

He studied architecture with François-Jacques Delannoy (1755–1835) at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris .

Chevron was the city architect of Liège from 1817 to 1825 and was of decisive importance for the urban design. He drafted the plans for the construction of the University of Liège on the former site of the Wallonia Jesuit College (1582–1773) in the city center of Liège - at today's place du 20-Août . At that time, Liège had just come out of French rule and was part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands .

Liège 1828, after design by Chevron

Wilhelm Friedrich Prince of Orange-Nassau founded the university in his newly added domain. With this, however, he only implemented a decree of Napoleon of March 17, 1808, in which he determined that Liège should receive a faculty of literature and a faculty of natural sciences as part of the establishment of his imperial university.

The academy hall was built between 1819 and 1824 from recycled stones from the old Jesuit church. The building is exemplary of the architectural style of the outgoing revolutionary architecture .

Chevron also made a series of etchings of the ruins of the Liège Lambertus Cathedral , which was destroyed at the end of the 18th century.

His successor as city architect was Julien-Etiénne Remont (1800-1883).
