Jean-Pierre Staelens (basketball player)

Jean-Pierre Staelens ( June 15,  1945 - December 31, 1999 ) was a French basketball player .

career

The 1.97 meter tall Staelens played 102 international matches for France between 1965 and 1972 (9.3 points / game). He was in the squad at the European Championship finals in 1967 and 1971.

Between 1964 and 1969 and from 1970 to 1978 he played for ASC Denain-Voltaire in the top division of France. In 1969/70 he made a stopover at RCM Toulouse. Staelens became French champions with Denain in 1965. In the playing years 1965/66, 1966/67 and 1967/68 he led the basket hunter list of the league. His highest average was 29.4 points per encounter in the 1966/67 season. On March 4, 1967, he set a new record for the French league when he scored 71 points in the game against Valenciennes.

Staelens was Tony Parker's godfather and married to his aunt. He died of a heart attack.
