Jean-Yves Marin (* 1955 in Caen ) is a French medieval archaeologist and museum director.

Life

Marin studied at the University of Caen and graduated in 1980 with the Diplôme d'études approfondies . His scientific specialty is the urban archeology of the Middle Ages . As the urban archaeologist of Caen, he led numerous excavations and then became a conservator, then director of the Musée de Normandie there until 2009.

In 2009 he was appointed director of the Musée d'art et d'histoire de Genève and its various locations (main building, Musée Rath , Maison Tavel , Cabinet d'arts graphiques and Bibliothèque d'art by Patrice Mugny, Minister for Culture and Sport of the City of Geneva) et d'archéologie) with the task of implementing the focus on the general public as indicated by an audit by the Parisian cultural engineers Eurologistiques. Both his nomination and this new line immediately met with great resistance. Several prominent members of the board of directors of the Friends' Associations, such as the collectors Jean Bonna and Jean-Paul Barbier-Mueller, demonstratively withdrew from any further support for the Musée d'art et d'histoire de Genève. Officially, the Friends' Associations never welcomed Jean-Yves Marin as director, but stuck to their demand for the rehabilitation of Caesar Menz, who had been dismissed three weeks before Patrice Mugny was appointed, as he could not be accused of serious errors.

Nevertheless, from 2010 to 2016, the city of Geneva entrusted Marin with the defense of the renovation and expansion project of the Musée d'art et d'histoire in Geneva by the office of the architect Jean Nouvel, together with the controversial partnership agreement with the oil billionaire Jean-Claude Gandur since it was signed in 2010 . Since the project was rejected in a referendum in February 2016, Marin has been taking part in the preparations for a new project. However, the main responsibility for this now lies in the hands of the former directors of the Ethnological Museum and the International Red Cross Red Crescent Museum in Geneva, Jacques Hainard and Roger Mayou, respectively, until a successor has been found for Marin, who will retire in autumn 2019.

He is a member of the Scientific Council of the Cité du Vin in Bordeaux , the Orientation Committee for the renovation of the Musée de l'Homme in Paris, the Scientific Council of the Mémorial de Caen pour la Paix and the Scientific Council of the Master of Advanced Studies (MAS ) en conservation du patrimoine et muséologie of the University of Geneva .

Marin has also been an associate professor at the Université Senghor d'Alexandrie since 1996 and teaches at various European universities, in particular on deontology , a topic for which his assessments are recognized in the francophone world.

Marin became involved very early on in the ICOM environment and was President of the French Committee (1992–1998), then President of the Comité International des Musées d'archéologie et d'histoire (1998–2004) and a member of the Comité International de déontologie des Musées ( 1998-2004). He helped draft the ICOM Code of Ethics, which was published in 2007.
