Jean Babin

Jean Babin (born February 26, 1905 in Montfaucon-d'Argonne , Département Meuse , † December 14, 1978 in Varennes-en-Argonne ) was a French Romance scholar , dialectologist and high official in education.

life and work

Babin attended school in Bar-le-Duc and studied in Nancy with Charles Bruneau . He completed his habilitation in 1950 with Charles Bruneau in Paris with the two theses Les Parlers de l'Argonne (Paris 1954) and Les lieux-dits de la Commune de Boureuilles (Meuse). Etude de caractérisation toponymique (Paris 1952).

His career as a senior education officer began after the World War in the Moselle department . From 1946 to 1948 he was in Saarland, from 1948 professor in Lille. In 1955 he became rector of the Strasbourg Academy, and from 1960 to 1972 he was an initiative-rich rector of the Bordeaux Academy. In Pessac , the avenue du Recteur Jean Babin commemorates him.
