Jean Baptiste Francois Bulliard

Life

Bulliard studied in Langres , then in Clairvaux Abbey and in Paris. There he also practiced as a doctor. He was a supporter of Jean-Jacques Rousseau .

In his work Dictionnaire élémentaire de botanique (1783) he contributed to the spread and consolidation of botanical terminology and the Linnaeus system . In the field of mycology (fungal science), his panels are significant, with which he depicted mushrooms on 393 of a total of 602 panels. Many of the colored mushroom pictures are important for the system, as they were chosen as iconotypes of species names. The work is one of the great hand-colored panel works of the late 18th century and was of great importance for the new systematic methods developed at this time.
