life and work

On his father's side, Jean Boivin came from a Norman family of lawyers. On his mother's side, he was the nephew of the orientalist at the Collège de France Pierre Vattier (1623–1667). Boivin lost his parents at an early age and grew up under the supervision of his older brother Louis Boivin (1649–1724), hence the name Jean Boivin the Younger . At the age of 10 he came to Paris in the household of the Minister Claude Le Peletier (1631–1711). He attended the Collège du Plessis and specialized in Greek studies. His scholarship led him to the royal library in 1686 , where he became librarian in 1692, in 1698 responsible for the manuscripts, from 1720 "garde" (in a leading position). In 1705 he was accepted into the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres (as Associé , 1724 Pensionnaire ), to which his brother had been a member since 1701. From 1706 he held the chair of Greek studies at the Collège de France (as the successor to Julien Pouchard , 1656-1705). In 1716 he started a family. In 1721 he was admitted to the Académie française (seat no. 21). From 1712 he was a member of the Accademia della Crusca . He died at the age of 63.
