Jean Lepautre (actually le Pautre) (born June 28, 1618 - † February 2, 1682 ) was a French engraver and etcher .

Life

Le Pautre was the brother of the architect Antoine Le Pautre . He began as an apprentice to the carpenter and building contractor Adam Philippon, with whom he traveled to Rome in 1640 . He developed a special skill as a draftsman . For the work of his master, Curieuses Recherches de plusieurs beaux morceaux d'ornements antiques et modern tant dans la ville de Rome que autres lieux d'Italie , published in 1645, he created numerous engravings. His countless and lavish designs consisted mainly of ceilings, friezes, mantelpiece, door frames and wall decorations. He also designed firebacks, buffets, cupboards, pillar tables and other pieces of furniture.

Le Pautre worked for the tapestry manufactory for a long time . His work is often overloaded and artful. His work comprises around 1,500 copper engravings, including a portrait of himself. Most of them were published as collections under various titles ( Livre de miroirs tables, etc .; Feuillages et autres ornements ; Vases et bordures de miroirs ; Escussons ). In the 19th century they regained importance as models for the style of Louis XIV .

In 1677 Lepautre was admitted to the Paris Academy.
