Jean Painlevé

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jean Painlevé (born November 20, 1902 in Paris , France , † July 2, 1989 there ) was a French documentary filmmaker , set designer and actor . He is considered one of the pioneers of documentary film and developed underwater film recording techniques as early as the 1920s.

life and work

Painlevé, son of the mathematician and two-time Prime Minister Paul Painlevé , studied medicine in Paris , then biology and then worked in the field of comparative anatomy . In order to convey the colors and shapes of nature, he began to film and in 1925 made “his first film about the development of a fish.” He experimented with technical processes and developed recording techniques for underwater films. As a silent observer of the animal world, he drew popular stories and dramas. He was a crossover between science and the avant-garde of early film. His fanatical realism seemed almost surreal and inspired artists such as Man Ray and Luis Buñuel .

Among other things, he also worked as a book editor. In 1948 he was responsible for the publication of the book Le cinéma scientifique français .
