Jean Payart

Jean Payart (born March 22, 1892 in Sainte-Menehould , † January 25, 1969 ) was a French diplomat, ambassador and French high commissioner in Austria (1950-1955).

Life

Payart completed his legal studies with a state examination and diploma at the private university École libre des sciences politiques in Paris and entered the diplomatic service in 1920. He served as an infantryman in World War I and was wounded in German captivity.

He was, among other things, Legation Councilor in Moscow from 1931 to 1937 . He served as the French ambassador in Belgrade from 1945 to 1950 . Subsequently, Payart was appointed from June 29, 1950 to July 27, 1955 as the French high commissioner in occupied post-war Austria . From 1956 to 1957 he served as the French ambassador in Saigon .

In 1937 Payart was awarded the Legion of Honor ( Officier de la Légion d'Honneur ).
