Jean-Pierre Faye (2002)

Jean Pierre Faye (born July 19, 1925 ) is a French writer , philosopher and literary historian . He is not a co-founder of Tel Quel magazine , but only a member of the editorial committee from No. 14 (summer 1963) to No. 31 (autumn 1967).

Faye's main interest is the theory of narration . In his eyes, a narrative is characterized by the fact that it internally dispenses with the distinction between true and false, but has an exclusive character compared to other narratives: each narrative asserts the inaccuracy of all other narratives at the same time. The relationship between linguistically composed history and historical truth is one of the basic problems of his work.

His best known scientific work is Langages totalitaires. Critique de la raison / économie narrative (1972) (German totalitarian languages , 1977), a meticulous analysis of the ideological movements in Germany during the Weimar Republic . In Le piège he describes the political behavior of Martin Heidegger in the Third Reich . It is his thesis that Heidegger's work since 1934 was by no means characterized by ' inner emigration ' and implicit resistance to the Nazi regime, but merely by the idealistic demarcation from other specialist colleagues. After 1945, Heidegger used the abstractness of his writings to present them in public as if they were marked by internal resistance to the dictatorship, while in reality they merely portrayed a conflict with colleagues.

Faye's literary work, which is shaped by William Faulkner , consists mainly of short stories ; La Cassure and Battement deal with the Algerian war . For the novel L'Écluse , which deals with the Cold War , Faye received the " Prix Renaudot " in 1964 . He also wrote the libretto for a chamber opera by Juan Allende-Blin .

After retiring from Tel Quel in 1967, Faye co-founded Change magazine with Jacques Roubaud . In the period that followed, Faye and Tel Quel engage in violent ideological battles.
