Jean Royère

Jean Royère (born July 3, 1902 in Paris , France , † May 14, 1981 in Pennsylvania , USA ) was a French designer for furniture and interior decorator.

Life

At the age of 29, Royère decided to give up his job as a foreign trade merchant and take up the trade of interior decorator. He had no previous training, but had a feeling for interior design and began to work in various cabinet makers in the Parisian Faubourg Saint-Antoine . With the design for the Brasserie Carlton on the Champs-Élysées from 1933 he was successful. In the years up to 1942 he worked with Pierre Gouffé .

After the Second World War , Royère started his own company and decided to open offices in countries in the Middle East and in Peru. There were z. B. King Faruq of Egypt , King Hussein of Jordan and the Shah of Iran his customers who had their palaces furnished by him. In Europe, his furniture stood out for its clear lines and safe handling of colors and materials. Despite surprising solutions, his creations were always functional.

Examples of this are his Boule seating, his Croisillon sofa from 1948, his armchairs for the diplomatic mission of France in Helsinki from 1950, his Ruban sofa from around 1950 or the wooden Quille double bed , created in 1956 for the Balsans in Paris. 1953 Sesseluf type armchairs and stools were created . In 1955 he designed a sideboard with flower arrangements , which was auctioned off at Christie's in London in October 2017 .

Before Royère went to the USA in 1980, he left his entire archive to the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris . He died in Pennsylvania a year later.
