from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jeffrey L. Getty (born July 14, 1957 in New London , Connecticut , † October 9, 2006 in California ) was an American AIDS activist and the first person to be treated with the bone marrow of a baboon .

In the 1980s, Getty became infected with AIDS. In 1995 he was the first person to receive baboon bone marrow. The hope was that this could revolutionize the treatment of AIDS since baboons are immune to HIV.

However, the experiment failed. Getty's body was breaking down the foreign cells.

Getty was committed to the fight against AIDS and helped pave the way for antiretroviral therapy ( HAART ).

Getty died of heart failure as a result of his AIDS illness at the age of 49.
