Jeløya is an island in the Norwegian municipality of Moss in the province of Viken .

history

Jeløya was a peninsula until the Mosse Canal was built in 1855. After that, the bridge over the canal was the connection between Jeløya and the mainland of Moss. Initially a low bridge, it was replaced by a bascule bridge in 1957 , the opening of which, however, was suspended in the early 1990s. Part of the city of Moss is located on the southeastern part of Jeløya.

With 19 km² Jeløya is the largest island in the Oslofjord. Jeløya consists largely of young lava rock from the Permian . Other islands in the Oslofjord, including Revlingen , Eldøya , Missingene and Søsterøyene , were formed during the same period. Ringerike sandstone has been found in some parts of the island and fossilized cephalaspidomorphi have been found. The largest Norwegian moraine from the Ice Age crosses Jeløya, crosses to the east of Moss and Rygge and continues from Sweden to Finland .

Until the 1990s, two of Moss' largest industrial areas -  Moss Glassverk and Moss Verft  - were on the southern part of Jeløya. The Moss Glassverk produced containers from 1898 to 1999. Moss Verft was founded in 1870 and was active in shipbuilding until 1987 and was one of the largest employers in the municipality to date. These areas are now being turned into expensive apartments and post-industrial businesses. Jeløya is now well known for its beaches, views, a frequented harbor and one of Norway's most famous art galleries, Galleri F 15 near Alby.
