Jenő Janovics (born December 8, 1872 in Ungvár , Austria-Hungary , † November 16, 1945 in Cluj-Napoca , Romania ) was a Hungarian film pioneer and mentor of the directors Alexander Korda and Michael Curtiz .

Life

Jenő (Eugen) Janovics attended the theater school in Budapest . Approx. In 1896 he became a member of the ensemble of the National Theater in Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca), Hungary . During this time he put his professors check off, and in 1900 received his doctorate at the local university (now the Babes-Bolyai University ) for Dr. phil. In 1902 he was appointed director of the Kolozsvár National Theater. On March 16, 1909 Janovics was elected chairman of the 37 theater companies in the country's actors' association. In 1929 Nikolaus Graf Bánffy (1873–1950) joined Eugen Janovics as co-director at the Kolozsvár National Theater.

Janovics took an early interest in the new medium of film and produced his first feature film The Yellow Foal (Sárga csikó) in 1913 (under the aegis of the French film company Pathé ). Most of Janovics' productions have not survived. We know, however, that he had a particular preference for topics with local flavor and literary films ( Anna Karenina , Schuld und Sühne etc.). Under Janovics, the Transylvanian Kolozsvár (Klausenburg) became the second center of young Hungarian film production for a few years. Janovics founded the Corvin production company taken over by Korda in 1918 and, after the transfer of Transylvania to Romania , the Transylvania production.
