Jerusalem is a Christian hard rock band formed in 1975 in Gothenburg , Sweden . The name of the band refers to the city of Jerusalem .

history

In 1975 Ulf Christiansson (guitar, vocals) founded the band in Gothenburg. According to his own account, he had received the vision of forming a Christian hard rock band from God. His mission is to tell young people about God. Jerusalem was thus the first Swedish Christian hard rock band and had a particularly difficult time, as the band received strong criticism from church institutions and individual Christians who associated hard rock with drug use and Satanism . In 1978 the self-titled debut album was released, which it says sold 20,000 times in the first six months.

In 1980 the second album was released, simply titled Volume 2 . Pat Boone released the two LPs through his record company Lamb and Lion in the United States. The third album Warrior (in Sweden: Krigsman ) was accompanied by a line-up change and Peter Carlsohn (bass) and Michael Ulvsgärd (drums) became part of the band. In 1983 Vi Kan Inte Stoppas appeared . After successful tours between 1983 and 1985, including in the USA, Jerusalem decided to take a break. As a farewell, the band released a live album with recordings of their US tours. In 1987, as a reaction to the burgeoning (lyrical) Satanism in metal , the band released the album Dancing on the Head of the Serpent with Reidar Ingvald Paulsen on keyboard , which because of its cover artwork (an army boot that steps on a demon) by parts of the Christian Rock scene was rejected. After another break, the album Prophet was released in 1992 .

After the release of some live albums and compilations , the album She was released in 2010 , a concept album about Babylon .

style

Jerusalem initially played hard rock in the popular style of the 1970s with Christian lyrics, which was relatively unusual both in Sweden and in the rest of the world at the time. At the beginning they usually released their albums in two versions: one in Swedish and one for the English-speaking market. From the 1980s onwards, Jerusalem played a hair metal- oriented style with various pop influences. With the comeback album Dancing on the Head of the Serpent only English-language songs were released. From the 1990s they adopted a guitar sound reminiscent of U2 with echo effects .
