Jerzy Petersburski
Jerzy Petersburski (born April 20, 1895 in Warsaw , Russian Empire , † October 7, 1979 in Warsaw) was a Polish pop composer.
Life
He studied at the Warsaw Conservatory , then in Vienna . He became known through his collaboration with various Warsaw theaters and cabarets. In 1922, together with the violinist Artur Gold , he founded the Gold-Petersburski-Band, which became known through numerous recordings.
His greatest international success was the song Tango Milonga , composed in 1928 for the Musikrevue Warszawa w kwiatach (Warsaw in Flowers), with the German text by Fritz Löhner-Beda and the English text by Jimmy Kennedy as Oh, Donna Clara! became a world hit. Another hit was Ta ostatnia niedziela (This Last Sunday), sung by his favorite singer Mieczysław Fogg . He also composed film music.
Between 1947 and 1967 he stayed in South America ( Argentina , Brazil , Venezuela ) before finally returning to Poland. He died in Warsaw in 1979 and was buried in the Powązki cemetery .
