Jessaul
Jessaul (also Esaul , Russian есаул , pronounced: jess-a-ul; from the Turkic word yasaul - the superior) referred to a rank among the Cossacks . The rank was by the Polish king Stefan Batory established in 1576 and met from 1798 to 1800 at the rank of captain of cavalry or a captain of infantry. In the 19th century the rank of Jessaul was gradually abolished.
