Jesse James Garrett (* 1950 in Ottawa ) is a Canadian designer and co-founder of the strategy and design consultancy "Adaptive Path" , which is based in San Francisco, California.

He started his career in the web design community in the early 2000s with his diagram, The Elements of User Experience , which was later published as a book. In a 2005 article, Garrett coined the term Ajax while working on the Describes the asynchronous technology behind new services like Google Maps and Google Suggest and the resulting user experience that made it possible to surf without interruption by avoiding the reloading of the entire page.

Garrett is the author of "The Elements of User Experience," a conceptual model of user-centric design that was first published as a diagram in 2000 and a book in 2002. A second edition of the book was published in 2010. Although it was originally for use in web design was intended, the Elements model was adopted in other areas such as software development and industrial design. He also created the first standardized notation for interaction design , called the visual vocabulary. Garrett's "iWitness" project was one of the winners of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation's "Knight News Challenge 2011" media innovation competition .

Awards

In May 2006, Garrett was awarded the "Rave Award" of Wired Magazine awarded in the field of technology.

Private life

Garrett was born in Ottawa , Ontario , Canada and grew up in Florida . He lived in Los Angeles for 5 years before moving to San Francisco in 1999 . He was married to Rebecca Blood from 2001 to 2014 and they have one child together.
