Jestina Mukoko

Jestina Mukoko is a Zimbabwean human rights activist. She is the director of the Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP).

Life

The trained journalist and former news anchor of the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation works for the Zimbabwe Peace Project , an organization founded in 2000 with financial support from the Dutch and Canadian governments, whose reports on the situation in the country are sent to African and Western embassies in Harare for confidential evaluation be used in diplomatic correspondence. Mukoko collected evidence against President Robert Mugabe's regime and built a network of human rights defenders.

Mukoko was abducted from her home in Norton on December 3, 2008 by about 15 armed men . Oppositionists assume that the ruling party is behind the kidnapping. According to her 15-year-old son, the gunmen pretended to be police officers. In the days after Mukoko's abduction, activists Zacharia Nkomo , Brodrick Takawira , Pascal Gonzo and Gandhi Mudzwinga were also kidnapped.

Since the beginning of January 2009, Mukoko and a few other supporters have been standing trial in Harare for conspiracy to lead a coup. Among other things, they are said to have planned the overthrow of President Robert Mugabe and already made initial preparations, including the recruitment of people and their military training in Botswana . She is currently in Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison .

After various courts ordered her release in the course of the trial against Mukoko at the end of 2008 without the police complying with these demands, the human rights activist was released from the detention center on March 5, 2009. While in detention, she was subjected to repeated torture, including multiple bans on medical care.

On December 10th, 2009, the international day of human rights, the human rights award of the city of Weimar was awarded to Jestina Mukoko and Sonja Biserko from Serbia. As part of the “Parliamentarians protect parliamentarians” initiative of the German Bundestag , MP Marina Schuster tries to get Mukoko.

In 2010 Mukoko received the International Women of Courage Award for her commitment .
