The Jesuit Church , now the Parish Church of the Holy Trinity , is a Baroque Roman Catholic church in Sibiu . It is located on the Great Ring and forms an ensemble of buildings with the former Jesuit residence (today the Catholic parish house).

history

Since 1543 the parish church and all other churches in Sibiu were Protestant. Only when Transylvania was incorporated into the Habsburg Monarchy from 1688 onwards, a Catholic community emerged again. After 1689 the Jesuits were given sales arbors on the Great Ring. When they requested a building site for their church on the Great Ring, the magistrate refused permission. In 1721, the commanding general Damian Hugo von Virmont presented a completed contract according to which the Jesuit order was given several properties for the construction of a church and a residence. The foundation stone was laid in 1726, the building was completed in 1733 and consecrated on September 13 by Bishop Gregor Sorger. The structurally independent tower through which the lane leads from the Großer to the Kleiner Ring was added in 1738.

With the abolition of the order in 1773, the Jesuit settlement dissolved; the church remained a Catholic parish church.

Construction and equipment

The Jesuit Church is a pilaster church with two side chapels in each yoke and galleries above it . A stitch cap vault forms the end . Of the predominantly baroque furnishings, the Maria with the child above the tabernacle is considered to be "the most important baroque painting in Sibiu". On the south wall of the choir stands the monumental grave monument of Field Marshal Otto Ferdinand von Abensperg and Traun (1677–1748), a work by the sculptor Anton Schuchbauer . The picture windows with biblical, hagiographic and allegorical motifs were made in Budapest in 1901 .
