The evangelical parish church with its five-button tower is the most distinctive and still tallest building in Sibiu in Transylvania . Its tower is approx. 73 m high, with a side length of 11 m. It can be seen from afar, from every approach to the city.

history

For centuries, Sibiu was the religious and political center of the Transylvanian Saxons , who in the middle of the 16th century accepted the Lutheran faith through the church reformer Johannes Honterus . The original (pre-Reformation) St. Mary's Church was built in three construction phases from around the middle of the 14th century on the remains of a Romanesque basilica . In 1448 the so-called "Ferula" was built on the west side (and later expanded), which is now used as a space for exhibitions or musical performances.

Electric light and heating were installed in the church as early as 1910.

Until today, the seat of the bishop of the Evangelical Church AB is in Sibiu . Reinhart Guib has held the office of Evangelical Bishop since 2010 . The evangelical parish church is also home to the Hermannstädter Bachchor .

location

The parish church is located in the Upper Town of Sibiu's old town and is surrounded by Huetplatz and the courtyard of the Brukenthal Lyceum , in the middle of which there is also the Bishop Teutsch monument. From the squares surrounding the church there are passages to the small and large ring as well as stairs to the lower town .

Organs

Sauer organ

There is said to have been an organ in the church as early as 1350 , although no instrument has survived from this time. The present organ was installed by W. Sauer Orgelbau in 1914–1915 . With 78 stops on four manuals and pedal it is the largest instrument in Transylvania. In 1998 the Sauer organ was completely restored.

Hahn organ

On the south pore there is another organ, built in 1748 by the Transylvanian organ builder Johannes Hahn. Originally built for the church in Michelsdorf (Rum. Boarta), it was brought here in 1948 from the aula of the Brukenthal School. Restored in 1988 by the regional church organ workshop and again overhauled by Hermann Binder in 2008/2009 , it is now regularly used for concerts.

particularities

In the main nave of the church there are several elaborate epitaphs , including that of Samuel von Brukenthal . In addition to the “new” main altar, parts of the medieval altars have been preserved in a modified form. Also of importance is the Rosenau fresco from 1445 (Johannes von Rosenau) , which depicts the path of life, the Passion and the Ascension of Christ.

The bronze baptismal font is said to have been made using the material of a melted Ottoman cannon.
