Jesus Loves You was a British band formed by singer Boy George . The band's music is a mix of electronic dance music , Indian classical music and western pop music . Her lyrics are about love , spirituality and the equality of all people.
history
After Boy George left the band Culture Club , he tried to start a solo career. He also achieved this relatively successfully with the singles on his debut album Sold in 1987.
For the next two albums, Boy George wanted to take a new direction by trying his hand at electronic dance music. But the singles of the two albums did not have the desired commercial success, but were often played in discos. To get back to commercial success, Boy George founded the band "Jesus Loves You" with other musicians. Because he believed that this project would be more successful if nobody knew that he was the head of the band, Boy George took on the pseudonym "Angela Dust" from now on.
In After the Love , the first song by Jesus Loves You to be released as a single, Boy George came to terms with his breakup with ex-boyfriend Jon Moss . Ironically, he wrote the song with Moss. Jesus Loves You's first three singles had only moderate success in the UK .
On a trip through India Boy George got to know the Hare Krishna movement . He was deeply impressed by the Hare Krishna philosophy and then wrote the song Bow Down Mister . This was a crucial turning point for the band as it was their first religious song. Bow Down Mister was released as a single in 1991 and became a hit not only in the UK, but also in France , Switzerland , Germany and especially Austria , where the single made it to number 2 in the charts . The next singles were also better placed in Austria than in any other country.
Because of its great success, the debut album by Jesus Loves You, called The Martyr Mantras , was released in the same year . Boy George felt more and more drawn to Hare Krishna. According to his own statement, religion helped him overcome his heroin addiction .
At the end of 1991 a remix of Generations of Love and After the Love was released as a single. Jesus Loves You gave concerts in St. Petersburg , Riga , and Kiev in July 1992 and the highlight of the tour was a concert in Moscow's Luzhniki Olympic Stadium in front of around 35,000 spectators during a Hare Krishna festival.
In December 1992 the release of the second album Popularity Breeds Contempt was planned. As a little foretaste, the single Sweet Toxic Love (with Am I Losing Control as B-side ) was released in advance. But since the record company Virgin was so disappointed with the chart positions of the single, the album was not released. The remaining material recorded for Popularity Breeds Contempt has not yet been published. A short time later, Jesus Loves You dissolved.
