Russian battleship Evstafi Alkiwiadowitsch Pechlewanidi ( Russian Евстафий Алкивиадович Пехлеваниди , Greek Στάθης Πεχλιβανίδης * 29. October 1960 in Chimkent , Kazakh SSR ) is a retired Soviet football player of Greek origin.

life and career

origin

Jewstafi Pechlewanidi comes from a family of Greek descent with the original family name Lazaridis . The family owes its current name to his great-grandfather, who was a martial artist in the Ottoman Empire at the time and was given the nickname Pehlivan (Turkish for wrestler), which ultimately became a surname in the form of initially Pehlivan-Oglu and after fleeing to the former USSR as Pechlewanidi asserted. During his active playing career, his parentage earned him the nickname "Grek" (Russian for "Greek"). His grandfather was a Pontic Greek from Turkey who emigrated to Khabarovsk in 1917 and later settled in Batumi in what is now Georgia. Pechlewanidis father was also a soccer player and in the 1940s mainly for Dinamo Tiflis (1940-1946) active. Like many other Greeks in the Soviet Union, the family was relocated to Central Asia on Stalin's orders in 1949. Evstafi Pechlewanidi himself was therefore born in today's Kazakh town of Tschimkent (Schymkent), where he grew up.

Player career

In his hometown, the striker Pechlewanidi began his football career as a youth with the local club “Metallurg Tschimkent”. In 1979 he was committed by the Soviet first division club Kairat Alma-Ata . He was on the pitch for the team from Alma-Ata until 1990 and was one of the team's most important players for a long time. In 1989 he scored the earliest goal in the history of the Soviet league when he scored ten seconds after the start of the game against Dynamo Kiev . In total, he scored 94 goals in 273 league games for Kairat. He was known, among other things, for his enormous shooting power.

In 1990, shortly before the collapse of the Soviet Union , he moved to Levadiakos in Greece and scored 10 goals in 25 games in his first season, but he was relegated to the second division with his team . After later disputes with the coach as well as an extensive operation of the Achilles tendon , he finally moved to AS Fokikos in January 1993, then third class. After Pechlewanidi ended his playing career, he first turned his back on professional football. He closed a coaching career for himself and turned down, among other things, an offer as a coach from Ordabassy Schymkent . Later he devoted himself to a career as a youth coach as well as with Athens regional league clubs.

After his mother's death in 1996, he and his family moved to Athens , where he still lives today. In an interview he referred to Kazakhstan as his home country.
