The Jezioro Ełckie ( German Lycker See , also Lyck-See and Lyck See ) is a lake in the Pojezierze Ełckie ( Lycker Lake District ) in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in northeast Poland . The town of Ełk is located on the eastern bank of the lake . With a maximum depth of 55.8 meters, it is one of the ten deepest lakes in Poland.
In the lake there is an island on which the Teutonic Order began building a castle in 1398 , around which today's city was built. Today, a bridge that was built in 1910 and connects the two shores of the lake leads to the island, where you can visit the ruins of the castle.
There are suspicions that the remains of a German plane that crashed in World War II lie at the bottom of the lake .
