The Lycker Lake District , also called the Lycker Lake District , ( Polish Pojezierze Ełckie ) forms the easternmost part of the Masurian Lake District in northeastern Poland and at the same time a mesoregion according to the geomorphological classification of Poland .
geography
In addition to the lakes of the Sapina and Orzysz rivers in the southwest and the large Łaśmiady ( Laszmiaden Lake , from 1938 Laschmiedensee ) in the center of the Lyck Lake District, countless 1 smaller lakes as well as the northern and eastern tributaries of the Ełk characterize a largely untouched landscape. Its formation is the result of the Baltic Ice Age . Boulder clay deposits form a unique relief , which shows itself in a varied hilly landscape with many depressions without drainage, as well as fragments of sand and gravel .
nature
To the north of the city of Ełk , on the border with the Russian Kaliningrad Oblast , the Borkener Forest ( Puszcza Borecka ) reserves extend . They form the northern outer ring of the Lyck lake area and are among the last European primeval forest areas . With their huge forests , ice age lakes and wetlands , they offer a habitat for countless plants and animals from bygone European eras . Particularly noteworthy are the occurrences of elk and bison in Puszcza Borecka.
Infrastructure
The best developed area of the Lyck Lake District is the urban area of Ełk in the east of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship , around 140 km from Olsztyn and 220 km from the Polish capital Warsaw .
traffic
There are rail connections between the city of Ełk and the capital Warsaw, as well as Gdansk and Białystok . The smaller towns in this region can be reached either by bus or with an ordinary car.
There are no longer any public transport connections on the railway lines between Ełk and Wydminy and to Rajgród . The low demand and the crossing of newly created reserve territories did not allow the route operation to revive after the Second World War . However, in the summer months there is a narrow-gauge operation of the Lycker Kleinbahn ( Polish Ełcka Kolej Wąskotorowa ) to Laski Małe in the direction of Zawady-Tworki and Kalinowo .
