Jiří Müller (born December 28, 1943 in Brno ) is a Czech mechanical engineer , dissident and politician .

Life and action

He studied mechanical engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague , where, among other things, he contributed to the student magazine of the mechanical engineering faculty "Bukhar" published by Lubomír Holeček. In 1966 he was banned from studying because he wanted to found a non-communist student organization. In 1968 he was rehabilitated and worked in the student movement, but was again excluded before graduating in 1970; however, he passed his examination as an engineer before Jan Rollem, who later became Jan Ruml's deputy minister . It was not until 1990 that he was able to complete his studies with a diploma. From 1971 to 1976 he was charged with sedition and imprisoned until 1977. He was one of the first to sign Charter 77 . In 1979 he married Brona Koutná, with whom he has two children. From 1981 to 1989 he was persecuted again for his political activities.

After the Velvet Revolution in 1989 he was one of the representatives of the Občanské fórum movement (Citizens' Forum). From June to November 1990 he was the director of the Office for the Protection of Constitutionality and Democracy ( Úřadu pro ochranu ústavnosti a demokracie , ÚOÚD), the predecessor of the domestic intelligence service BIS . From 1990 to 1992 he was a member of the Czech National Council (ČNR). He is also active in the non-profit sector:

  • Since 1990 he has been chairman of the board of directors of the Jan Hus Educational Foundation .
  • From 1990 to 2006 he was a member of the Board of Trustees of Nadace Charty 77 (Stiftung Charta 77).
  • From 1999 to 2001 he was a member of the board of directors of Masaryk University .
  • Since 2003 he has been a member of the board of trustees of the evangelical-free church aid organization ADRA .
