Jiankou

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jiankou ( Chinese  箭 口 , 箭扣 , Pinyin Jiàn kǒu, Jiàn kòu ) is a 9.3 km long section of the Great Wall of China in Beijing's Huairou district, 73 km north of Beijing . The Jiankou section lies between the Mutianyu wall sections - ten kilometers east - and Huanghuacheng . Its poor state of preservation and the location on a ridge lined with jagged cliffs and steep slopes make an inspection dangerous.

Jiankou was built from white dolomite during the Ming Dynasty in 1368 , which is visible from a great distance. The section has many picturesque spots. One of them is the "Tower of the Soaring Eagle", which was built on the highest part of Jiankou. The "Heavenly Steps" are another famous place. Here steps rise almost vertically, so that it is difficult to get hold of them. Other peculiarities are the "Peking Knot" - at which three different sections of the Great Wall come together - the "Nine Eye Tower", the "Zhengbei Watchtower", the "Cloud Staircase" and other watchtowers, named because of its nine lookout holes.

In 2015, the nine-eye tower and a nearby fort were renovated, with some of the original appearance of the wall being significantly changed. Since 2016, larger parts of the Jiankou section have been renovated.
