Jim French (pseudonym Rip Colt ; born July 14, 1932 - † June 15, 2017 in Palm Springs ) was an American photographer , film producer and author . He was a co-founder of the Colt Studio Group .

Life

French was born in the United States. After finishing school, French studied at the Philadelphia Museum School of Art in Philadelphia from 1950 to 1954 . From 1955 to 1957, French was in active service in the United States Army , having previously served as a reservist for two years. French then went to New York City , where he worked as a fashion illustrator. Together with an acquaintance from the army, he founded the Luger mail order business , through which he sold pictures and drawings of homoerotic art in the 1960s. As an author, French published several books with photographs and drawings.

After his business partner had bought French's shares in Luger , he founded Colt Studio in New York in 1967 together with Lou Thomas . French had previously worked on the drawings and photographs for the new company for almost a year. Initially, Colt also sold drawings and photographs by mail order. After 15 years in New York, French decided to move to California in 1972, where he had traveled often because of the good weather and the large number of available models. In 1974 he bought the company shares of his business partner Lou Thomas at Colt Studio, whose headquarters he also relocated to California, in the San Fernando Valley .

French sold Colt Studio in 2003 to Prowest Media , owned by John Rutherford - former President of Falcon Studios - and his partner Tom Settle . In 2005 he was honored with induction into the Hall of Fame for the GayVN Awards .
