Jim Jim Falls

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jim Jim Falls are a waterfall in Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory , Australia .

The waterfall is located near the Twin Falls and near the eastern border of the national park and is about 80 km south of Jabiru . It can be reached via a side road, 60 km from the Kakadu Highway . The path may only be used with four-wheel drive vehicles . From the parking lot, a hiking trail leads through Jim Jim Creek to the falls basin.

In the waterfall, the Jim Jim Creek , a tributary of the South Alligator River , falls about 200 meters. It is believed that the area was a shallow sea 140 million years ago and this elevation developed out of the cliffs. This elevation measures a total of 330 meters today and stretches over 500 km along the eastern border of the park into Arnhem Land . In the dry season , the waterfall usually has no water. During this time, the fall basin is not connected to the creek. The park rangers check the pool for trapped crocodiles at the beginning of the dry season and remove them if necessary so that bathing is safe. However, this does not apply to the creek, where crocodiles live even during the dry season.
