Jim Lambie (* 1964 in Glasgow ) is a contemporary Scottish artist , DJ and musician .

Life

Jim Lambie attended the Glasgow School of Art from 1990 to 1994 . The artist feels connected to the history of Glasgow, characterized by industrialization or the utopias of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement.

As a musician, Jim Lambie worked as a xylophone player for the Glasgow band The Boy Hairdresser, which became a fan club after he left for the Brit pop band Teenage . In 2005 the artist was nominated for the Turner Prize for his installation Mental Oyster .

plant

Jim Lambie created his first Zobop floor installations with multi-colored vinyl tapes at the end of the 1990s: the color mass, which runs in geometric lines, vibrates in the room, the vibrations are transmitted pulsating to the viewer. Lambie's art relates to the atmosphere of trendy, glittering clubs, the places where music is best made with the pulse of the times. The Zobop installations call the 70s glam rock into the exhibition rooms, they visualize the beat of the music and are at the same time psychedelic dance floors where you can indulge in the intoxication of the music.

In his work, Jim Lambie primarily refers to the universe of pop music : discos, clubs, nightlife, song lyrics, legendary bands, fan cult or the observation of the aesthetic forms of music. The artist also mostly uses everyday objects in a transformational way for his works, so that the objects removed from everyday life now create a completely new sculptural perception.

Lambie's handling of materials is unorthodox and initially little related to traditional artistic materials. He works with found objects from flea markets or household items such as T-shirts, vases, belts, posters, chairs, mirrors or doors. Industrial materials such as concrete, MDF and metal panels, industrial paints and spray paint are also finding their way into his plant. In his exhibitions he would like to create a spatial concept similar to that of the Gesamtkunstwerk.
