Bronze sculpture “La Vençoise” in the city of Vence

Jim Ritchie (born December 5, 1929 in Montreal ) is a Canadian sculptor.

Live and act

Born in Montreal, the French-Canadian moved to Vence in southern France in 1967 , to the “Cité des Arts”. He lived there with Rita and Witold Gombrowicz in the "Villa Alexandrine", with a view of the main square of Vence, the "Place du Grand Jardin". His studio was in the tower of the villa and in the back garden.

In 1997 he took over a derelict farmhouse, the Mas de L'Ormée in the mountains above Vence with a view of the Matisse Chapel . For over 40 years he worked in the Tuscan town of Pietrasanta , where many of his bronze and marble sculptures were created.

The most important works from the various periods of his 60-year creative period are now shown directly in the Mas de L'Ormée. Large marble and bronze works can be seen in the garden of Le Mas. Jim Ritchie's monumental bronze sculpture “La Vençoise” stands in the middle of the old town of Vence. It is a cubist female figure whose allegorical incarnation is intended as a homage to the city of Vence.
