Jim Sanderson (born October 10, 1949 ) is an American mathematician and ecologist . He is considered to be the world's leading expert in the research and protection of the small wild cats of the American continent ( leopard cats (Leopardus) ).

After a 20 year career as a PhD mathematician at Los Alamos National Laboratory , Jim Sanderson quit his job to study biology and ecology. He traveled to Chile to study the endangered small cat Leopardus guigna (Chilean forest cat). He became an expert in the field of small wild cats and founded the Small Cat Conservation Alliance in 1996 .

Sanderson quickly turned to modern ecological methods such as wildlife telemetry and camera traps . With these he examined, among other things, the Andean cat and was able to observe this very rare wild cat with his own eyes. In February 2000, he published a photo of the Andean cat in National Geographic magazine .

Sanderson also worked for Conservation International (CI) and is a member of the IUCN ( International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources ) Small Cat Group.
