James Alexander "Jim" Watson (* 1961 in Montreal ) is a Canadian politician of the Ontario Liberal Party .

biography

After attending school, he studied at Carleton University and graduated in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and communication studies (BA Journalism & Communications).

Watson began his career in local politics when he became a member of Ottawa City Council in 1992 . On January 1, 1998, he was then mayor of Ottawa for the first time and held this office until 2000.

In October 2003 he was a deputy in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario elected and represented there by February 2010 the constituency Ottawa West-Nepean . Shortly after the election, he was appointed to the provincial government of Ontario by Prime Minister Dalton McGuinty , where he initially served as Minister for Consumer and Economic Affairs before becoming Ontario's first Minister for Health Promotion in June 2005. After another cabinet reshuffle, he became Minister for Local Affairs and Housing in 2007 and resigned from that position in January 2010 to run again for Mayor of Ottawa.

In November 2010 he was re-elected Mayor of Ottawa and took this office on December 1, 2010 as the successor to Larry O'Brien . In August 2019, Watson came out as gay.
