Lawrence "Larry" Robert O'Brien , (born July 19, 1949 in Ottawa ) is a Canadian politician. From December 1, 2006 to 2010, he was the 58th mayor of the Canadian capital Ottawa. O'Brien is a member of the Conservative Party of Canada .

Life

Training and work

O'Brien was born and raised in Ottawa. After his school career he studied at Algonquin College and graduated in 1972 with a degree in engineering. He then worked in research for various companies in the information and communications sector, including Motorola . He later went into business for himself with his own company.

Political activity

In July 2006, he proclaimed his right to vote in the mayoral elections. Before he officially entered the election campaign, he was relatively hopeless behind Terry Kilrea, the then incumbent Bob Chiarelli and the former city councilor Alex Munter. On August 30, 2006, Kilrea surprisingly gave up his candidacy.

A central question of content in the election campaign was the delay or termination of the expansion of the O-Train . Larry O'Brien advocated expansion plans. His statements on eliminating the homeless problem brought him criticism, but O'Brien was still able to prevail with 47.08% of the vote and a lead of over 32,500 over his challenger Alex Munter of the New Democratic Party . O'Brien won mostly in the rural districts outside the city center.

During his first week in office, he came under pressure when he proposed an increase and a. of his own salary from 140,000 to 172,000 Canadian dollars . The criticism was particularly directed at him because before the election he campaigned for a particularly prudent tax policy. In the face of public criticism, he revised this decision again.

On January 19, 2007, he established a task force to review the public transportation system in Ottawa. While Siemens filed a lawsuit against the city for delaying or failing to meet contracts worth $ 280 million, the city council was reviewing a new local transport plan. The new plan provided for the completion of the current construction sites as well as an expansion of the train connection to Riverside South, a district southwest of the international airport .

On April 1, 2009, O'Brien announced that he would run for a second term beginning November 2010. In the October election, however, he was defeated by his liberal challenger Jim Watson .

Bribery affair

As early as February 2007, O'Brien has been accused of offering mayoral candidate Terry Kilrea money or a position with the National Parole Board in exchange for his withdrawal from the 2006 mayoral election. Should that prove to be true, O'Brien would have violated two paragraphs of the criminal code. On June 8, 2009, he had to comment on the allegations in court.

Private

Larry O'Brien is a second married to Colleen McBride and has two sons from his first marriage.
