James "Jimmy" Ashall (born December 13, 1933 in Temple Normanton ) is a former English football player .

Career

Ashall was discovered as a player with the Hasland Old Boys in the Doe Lea Valley in the local Chesterfield & District Youth League and after a one-month trial training 17-year-old signed by Leeds United in October 1951 . His football career then had to pause for some time because of his military service with the Green Howards , his first six competitive games for the first team of Leeds, he completed in the second division season 1955/56 , which Leeds finished with the rise as second in the table. Before that, he had already shown excellent performances in the reserve team for a number of seasons. Missions were still rare for Ashall in the First Division , which was also due to the consistency of the two set defenders Jimmy Dunn and Grenville Hair . It was only when Dunn was injured for a long time at the beginning of the 1958/59 season that Ashall moved as a right-back into the regular team and formed the defender pair for two seasons with Hair, with the team missing out on relegation in the 1959/60 season as penultimate.

After four missions at the beginning of the second division season 1960/61 , he played no role in the plans of coach Jack Taylor and was placed on the transfer list in October 1960 , as did his teammates Jackie McGugan , John Kilford and Ted Burgin . Even the takeover of the coaching post by Don Revie in March 1961, which was to characterize the most successful phase in the club history of Leeds United, did not change anything; During the summer break, after 89 league and two FA Cup appearances, he moved to Weymouth FC in the Southern League . At Weymouth he played 79 competitive games without scoring until 1964, then continued his career at Gloucester City , where he scored two goals in 174 competitive games by 1968 and was team captain in the 1966/67 season.
