João Edmundo Lemos Carqueijeiro (born February 25, 1954 in Lobito , Angola) is a Portuguese sculptor and ceramist .

  • His father was a Portuguese colonial official who later served in Mozambique, where João Carqueijeiro lived until 1974 (Mozambique independence). The family then went back to Portugal.
  • 1977–1979: Artistic training in the "Curso Superior de Desenho na Cooperativa de Actividades Artísticas Árvore (ESAD)" under the direction of Prof. Sá Nogueira .
  • 1980–1982: Ceramics training at the La Bisbal Ceramics Academy , Girona (Catalonia), specializing in Raku .
  • since 1981 (until today): activity in teacher training for art education, from 1986 as professor for ceramics of the "Cursos Livres de Cerâmica na Cooperativa de Actividades Artísticas Árvore ".
  • 2005 (until today): Founding member of the project "Cerâmica Oficina 2000 & 5" (Exposição Colectiva de Cerâmica Contemporânea) (2005).
  • 2007: Member of the jury of the 8th International Ceramic Biennial in Aveiro .
  • The artist is known for large-scale ceramic reliefs and ceramic walls, for example at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Vilamoura (2010), or in the hall of the Biennale in Cerveira (2011).
  • He is an important representative of modern ceramics in Portugal and lives and works as a freelance artist in Porto .

Exhibitions, prizes, collections

  • The artist has so far held more than 70 group exhibitions and 12 solo exhibitions in Portugal, Spain, France, Macao (China), Germany, Tunisia and Egypt
  • He has received several ceramic awards, including a. the 1º Prémio Cerâmica Criativa of the IEFP (Institute for Employment and Training) in Porto .
  • His works are in various collections in Portugal, Japan and Macao (China), u. a. in the Amakusa City Hall in Hondo (Japan), or in the Museu do Azulejo in Lisbon .
